As the times change, so does travel, and travel during the sixteenth century in France was no exception. With the growth of cities and increases in trade travel became more prevalent in many ways. While the modes of transportation had not changed much from methods used in the previous centuries of the medieval period, there is evidence that more people were traveling during the sixteenth century in France and also that advances in the travel industry were being made.

Reasons for Travel in Sixteenth Century France

The people of sixteenth century France traveled for many reasons including business, recreation, religion, and in same cases, even fleeing the law and the possibility of persecution, which was a particular problem for Protestants and their leaders.

The Geography of Travel in Reformation France

France of the sixteenth century is similar, although not precisely the same, as the modern region recognized as France. It was bordered by Flanders, the Netherlands, the Holy Roman Empire (approximately where the current German border is), the Swiss cantons, the Duchy of Savoy and Spain. It also had several coastlines on the English Channel, the Bay of Biscay and the Mediterranean Sea.
